About Topic:
The management of spasticity in children is multi-disciplinary. It involves use of physiotherapy, medications, botulinum toxin, and various surgical procedures. Selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR) is a neurosurgical procedure used to reduce spasticity (muscle stiffness) in children—most commonly those with spastic cerebral palsy, especially spastic diplegia. Sensory (dorsal) nerve rootlets in the lumbosacral spinal cord are carefully identified. Rootlets that contribute most to abnormal muscle tone are selectively cut, while preserving those needed for normal sensation. This reduces excessive reflex activity responsible for spasticity. SDR is a one-time, irreversible procedure aimed at carefully selected patients, with outcomes highly dependent on appropriate selection and rehabilitation.

Learning Objectives:
1.     Learn the treatment options of spasticity in children, with an emphasis on Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy
2.     Learn the physiology and indications of Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy
3.      Learn the patient selection and outcomes of Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy
