Title: The White Matter That Came Back: Simple Treatment, Dramatic Recovery
About the topic: This case presents a child with early-onset seizures and acute encephalopathy with MRI showing diffuse leukoencephalopathy and diffusion restriction, mimicking severe irreversible injury. Stepwise evaluation highlights clues to a treatable neurometabolic cause and the impact of timely therapy on dramatic recovery. The case will reinforce this under-recognized pattern.
Learning objectives:
1. Identify imaging and clinical red flags suggesting a treatable metabolic cause of leukoencephalopathy
2. Understand the impact of early targeted therapy on reversibility and outcomes
Vaishakh Anand-
Title: Epilepsy or movement disorder? A case of facial twitching blurring the line.
About Topic:
This case describes an infant presenting since early life with recurrent abnormal facial movements. It raises one of the most fundamental questions in epileptology: are these events epileptic in nature or not? The atypical semiology warranted an in-depth evaluation, including multimodal imaging and electrophysiological studies. Following a targeted intervention, the symptoms resolved completely, though several important questions remain
Learning objectives:
1) The utility of multimodal imaging in pediatric epilepsy
2) The concept of generator vs modulator in seizure production
Mark Grinberg-
Title: A Postpartum Perplexity
About Topic:
This case presents a teenage postpartum patient with an acute onset of encephalopathy, headache and constellation of additional symptoms (amnesia, blurry vision, nausea/vomiting, abnormal movements). During admission she developed multiple episodes of transient motor and sensory phenomenon suggestive of seizures. She underwent a full neurological work up that required careful consideration of causes both related and unrelated to her recent pregnancy.
Learning objectives:
1) Formulation of a differential diagnosis for headache, confusion and seizures in a postpartum pediatric patient
2) Exploration of interplay between epilepsy and migraine
