About the Topic:
Infants are attracted to music and infant-directed singing appears to be ubiquitous across cultures. Here I will first discuss the characteristics of ID singing and infants’ responses. I will then present some research showing how the rhythms of ID singing modulate infants’ visual attention, followed by our recent work showing that the bi-directional dynamics between infants and caregivers differ during music and speech interactions. Finally, I will present some studies on how musicians communicate non-verbally to coordinate during music making together, and the social effects on audiences.
