About the topic
Infants are attracted to music and infant-directed singing appears to be ubiquitous across cultures. This session first discusses the characteristics of infant-directed singing and infants’ responses. It then presents research showing how the rhythms of infant-directed singing modulate infants’ visual attention, followed by recent work showing that the bi-directional dynamics between infants and caregivers differ during music and speech interactions. Finally, the session explores how musicians communicate non-verbally to coordinate during music-making together, and the social effects on audiences.
