Dr Aniruddha K Purohit a Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon at Aster Prime Hospital, Hyderabad, and Former Professor & Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), Hyderabad, where he served with distinction from 1988 to 2017. He completed his undergraduate and postgraduate medical education at RNT Medical College, Udaipur, Rajasthan (1974–1983), and pursued super-specialty training in Neurosurgery at SCTIMST, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, in 1988. With more than five decades of academic, clinical, and leadership experience, Dr. Purohit has made pioneering contributions to the neurosurgical management of cerebral palsy, spasticity, dystonia, and neuro-disability. His focused work in functional neurosurgery began in 1988 following advanced training exposure during the landmark workshop conducted by Prof. W.J. Peacock (Los Angeles, USA). He is internationally recognized for introducing and promoting advanced functional neurosurgical procedures in India, including Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy and Selective Motor Fasciculotomy (SMF). He coined the term SMF and published it in Acta Neurochirurgica in 1998, marking a significant milestone in spasticity and dystonia surgery. Dr. Purohit currently leads a comprehensive Neuro-Ortho-Plastic multidisciplinary rehabilitation model, integrating neurosurgery, orthopedics, physiotherapy, and rehabilitation sciences for individuals affected by spasticity and dystonia due to cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and other non-progressive neurological disorder. In 1994, he founded the Indian Family of Cerebral Palsy (IFCP) to support affected families and promote public awareness. He was also a Founder Member of the Indian Academy of Cerebral Palsy (IACP) established in 2004, creating a national scientific platform for multidisciplinary collaboration and evidence-based cerebral palsy management.
